How is it December already?? I know we all say that every single year, pretty much every month of the year creeps up on us more quickly than we’d like. (How is it March already? June? October? December??) You’d think we would have gotten use to the passage of time by now, but it’s always a little daunting to see another year coming to a close. Especially when we set goals for the year that haven’t come to fruition by December, and now we have to decide whether to scrap them or roll them over to the following year. That’s the situation I find myself in now. But that’s okay; it’s always nice to have a fresh start! My shop goals for 2018 are mainly marketing-oriented, since that’s my weakest area. I can sew from sunrise to sunset, but self-promotion is not my jam. It’s tough because I’m not really fond of social media. Nevertheless, if that’s what it takes to grow my shop, then I’ll (try to) do it!
Shop Goals For 2018
Stick to an Instagram strategy – I have gotten into a seemingly endless cycle with Instagram: I take pics that I think are Insta-worthy, add them to a list in Evernote with a caption and related hashtags, and when it’s my “ideal” time to post, I scroll through my list, trying to pick one, then I get overwhelmed and give up. I usually just use Instagram to see what other sewists are making, not to post anything of my own. But I’ve recently started using Planoly to create a real strategy. I know exactly what to post on what day at what time. And when it’s time, I get a nifty notification. Then I just copy and paste my caption into Instagram! It’s so helpful to just post right quick and go off to search the hashtags and see what the makers are making.
Keep growing on Pinterest – I’m more active on Pinterest than any other platform. I like it because it’s not about likes and comments; it’s more of a search engine than a social network. Most of my Pinterest traffic comes here to the blog instead of my shop, so I’d like to make it a driving force for both sites. I’m still trying to learn how to use it properly (keywords? Help!), but my goal is to use it to its maximum potential.
Engage in Etsy Teams – I think I’m part of, like, three teams. *goes to check* Actually, four! And I had no idea. I would like to be more involved in them to see what everyone’s selling. I was a shopper long before I was a seller! But as far as shop goals, I should be sharing my latest listings in my teams as well.
Share more on The Foldline and Sewcialists – These are both really great networks full of amazing makers. I’d like to use these as inspiration and encouragement more than marketing, but gaining some traffic wouldn’t hurt either!
Stop overthinking it! – My lack of marketing skills is mainly due to fear of self-promotion. Sometimes, after posting something about my shop to Instagram or Pinterest, I feel a little panicked. Not so much about likes or repins, but mainly about whether I’m over-selling. But I’m stepping it up, and I’ll check the results along the way.
What are your goals for 2018? They don’t have to be shop-related!
